Occupational Therapy in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

What occupational therapy does for autistic children, and how to find and fund it in Philadelphia and the Delaware Valley.

Occupational therapy (OT) helps autistic children build the practical skills of daily life — and, for many, helps with sensory processing, which can be one of the most significant parts of the autistic experience. It's one of the most commonly used and broadly helpful autism supports.

This page covers what OT involves, how to find a provider in Philadelphia, and how coverage works.

Occupational Therapy in Philadelphia specifically

Philadelphia and the Delaware Valley have many pediatric OT providers — private clinics, hospital-based programs (including CHOP), and school-based services — several with a sensory-integration or neurodiversity-affirming focus.

Coverage. Pennsylvania's Act 62 requires many state-regulated private plans to cover therapeutic care from occupational therapists as part of autism treatment for individuals under 21 (subject to the annual cap). Medical Assistance also covers medically necessary OT, and for children on Medicaid the EPSDT benefit is a strong entitlement. Self-funded employer (ERISA) plans are exempt from Act 62, so check your plan.

School-based OT is provided through the IEP when a child's motor or sensory needs affect their education — separate from, and able to run alongside, clinic-based therapy.

Wait times vary by provider; sought-after sensory-focused clinics can carry waitlists, so calling several is worthwhile.
