Autism Resources in Indiana
A statewide guide to autism services across Indiana — for families in Indianapolis, Fort Wayne, Evansville, South Bend, Bloomington, and communities across the state.
Indiana has some real strengths for autism families: one of the country's first autism insurance mandates (2001), the First Steps early intervention program, and strong Indianapolis anchors including Riley Children's Health, the Christian Sarkine Autism Treatment Center, and HANDS in Autism. Indiana also pioneered the Early Autism Evaluation (EAE) Hub — a statewide network of trained primary-care sites created specifically to shorten diagnostic wait times.
But Indiana families are also navigating a genuinely difficult and evolving situation: the state has been making significant changes to how Medicaid covers ABA therapy, including reimbursement rate reductions, a lifetime hour cap, and an age limit — changes that have drawn serious concern from providers and advocates. We cover this honestly below, because it directly affects access.
This page walks through how the pieces fit together and where the gaps are. We've written it as a starting point. Indiana readers who know specifics better than we do — tell us what we got wrong or missed.
