Autism Resources in California
A statewide guide to autism services across California — for families in Los Angeles, San Diego, Sacramento, San Francisco, and communities from the Bay Area to the Inland Empire.
California's autism system is built around something genuinely unusual: the Regional Center network and the Lanterman Act, under which services and supports for people with developmental disabilities are a legal entitlement — a right — rather than a waiver benefit rationed by a waitlist. In most states, home- and community-based disability services are delivered through Medicaid waivers with long waiting lists. California is different: if your child qualifies, the Regional Center is obligated to provide and coordinate services, most of them free regardless of income.
That doesn't mean everything is easy — regional centers vary in responsiveness, disputes happen, and access to specific providers still involves waits. But the underlying legal structure is a real advantage, and understanding it is the key to navigating services in California. This page explains how it works.
We've written this as a starting point. California readers who know specifics better than we do — tell us what we got wrong or missed.
