Occupational Therapy in Bangor, Maine

Occupational therapy (OT) is one of the most practical supports for many autistic children. Occupational therapists help with the everyday skills of childhood — self-care, fine motor tasks, handwriting, feeding — and, for many autistic kids, with sensory processing: understanding and responding to how a child experiences sound, touch, movement, and light.

In Bangor, OT is available locally, though, as with other services in Eastern Maine, the provider pool is smaller than in southern Maine. This page explains what OT does and how to access it here.

Occupational Therapy in Bangor specifically

In the Bangor area, occupational therapy for children is available through a few routes. For children under 5, Child Development Services (CDS) provides OT as part of early intervention and preschool special education, statewide and free for under-3s. Hospital-based and clinic outpatient OT serves the region, and some ABA providers offer or coordinate onsite occupational therapy alongside behavioral treatment. School-age children may receive OT through their IEP where it supports their education.

We want to be honest: Eastern Maine has fewer pediatric OTs than greater Portland, so waitlists are common and openings can be limited. Some families combine clinic OT with strategies they can use at home, and telehealth can help with coaching and consultation even where hands-on OT requires an in-person visit.
