ABA Therapy in Columbia, South Carolina
Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is the most commonly funded autism therapy in South Carolina, but it is also the most debated. In Columbia, ABA is offered by a mix of national companies and local clinics, and coverage usually flows through private insurance under Ryan's Law or through Medicaid. Expect waitlists, and expect to do real homework before you commit a young child to intensive hours.
ABA Therapy in Columbia specifically
In the Midlands, ABA services come from a combination of national ABA companies with Columbia-area clinics and smaller local providers. Diagnostic evaluations that often precede ABA frequently run through the USC School of Medicine's Child Development and Behavioral Pediatrics program or Prisma Health Children's Hospital-Midlands, and families sometimes wait months for an evaluation slot.
Coverage in South Carolina usually runs one of two ways. Ryan's Law (2007) is the state autism insurance mandate; it requires state-regulated group plans (historically employers with 51 or more employees) to cover behavioral therapy including ABA, subject to an annual dollar cap that started around $50,000 and has been inflation-adjusted, and historically an age-16 limit. Self-funded ERISA employer plans are exempt, and individual-market plans may differ, so verify your specific plan. The other path is SC Medicaid (Healthy Connections), which covers ABA; children under 21 have an EPSDT entitlement to medically necessary services, and the PDD Waiver funds early intensive behavioral intervention for young children (roughly ages 3-10) diagnosed with autism.
Because demand outstrips supply, waitlists are common in Columbia across Richland One, Richland Two, and Lexington district areas. It is worth getting on more than one list at once while you keep your evaluation moving.
