Autism Summer Camps Near Burlington, Vermont
Summer camp can be a great experience for an autistic child — or a stressful one — and the difference usually comes down to fit and preparation rather than the camp's label.
Some families do best with a specialized camp built for disabled kids; others thrive at an inclusive mainstream camp with the right accommodations. Neither is automatically better. What matters is whether the staff understand your child and will support them well.
This page covers the types of camps, how to vet them, funding paths in Vermont, and honest notes on access outside the Burlington area.
Autism Summer Camps in Burlington specifically
Around Burlington and Chittenden County, families generally have the widest set of camp options in Vermont — a mix of inclusive municipal and nonprofit day camps that can accommodate autistic children, plus some specialized and therapeutic programs. Even so, options are more limited than in a large metro area, and truly specialized autism camps can be few, fill early, and require travel.
Rural access is a real constraint. Families in the Northeast Kingdom or southern Vermont often have fewer nearby camps and may travel toward Burlington or rely on shorter local day programs. It is honest to say that "the right camp" may involve a drive, and that planning early in the year matters because good programs fill up.
On funding: some developmental disability supports routed through Vermont's designated agencies — the Howard Center serves Chittenden County — can include respite or family-directed funding that families sometimes apply toward summer supports. Vermont's flexible family-directed and Family Managed Respite options are worth asking about. Availability varies, so treat this as a question to ask, not a guarantee.
