Birmingham has the oldest autism school in Alabama and one of the few states that reserves scholarship money specifically for special-needs students. Glenwood's Allan Cott School opened in 1974 as Alabama's first school offering education and therapy to autistic children. The CHOOSE Act reserves its first 500 education savings accounts each year for students with special needs, with no income limit.
