Swimming matters more for autistic children than most parents realize, because drowning is a leading cause of death for kids on the spectrum who wander. Wilmington is unusually well served: the YMCA of Delaware runs a program built specifically for swimmers with autism, Nemours Children's Hospital teaches adaptive aquatics in its therapy pool, and British Swim School in Newark has a special-abilities track.
S.W.A.M. (Swimming With Autism) is a specialized water-safety program for children and adults with autism spectrum disorder, run by the YMCA of Delaware in partnership with Autism Delaware; Wilmington branches include the Central YMCA on West 11th Street, the Walnut Street YMCA and the Brandywine YMCA.
