Autism Diagnosis in Kahului, Hawaii

Getting an autism evaluation in Hawaii can be straightforward on Oahu and genuinely difficult on the neighbor islands — and Maui is a neighbor island. If you're a parent in Kahului with questions about your child's development, this page lays out the realistic paths, including when a trip to Oahu is likely.

A diagnosis is a door, not a verdict. It can unlock services, school supports, and funding — and it can also help a family and, later, a child, understand how their mind works. Our first 100 days guide is written for exactly the moment after that door opens.

Worth knowing up front:

  • On-island evaluators are limited; most of Hawaii's developmental specialists are on Oahu.
  • You do not need a diagnosis to start early intervention for a child under 3 — on Maui, through Imua Family Services in Kahului.
  • Many Maui families travel to Oahu or use telehealth for parts of the process.

If you're just beginning to wonder, trust your observations — parents are usually right that something is worth looking into, even when they can't name it. Read our therapy options guide to see what a diagnosis can lead to.

Autism Diagnosis in Kahului specifically

In Kahului, diagnosis usually means combining local starting points with a likely trip to Oahu — which is precisely why the neighbor-island gap matters so much here. Maui has limited on-island diagnostic capacity; most of Hawaii's developmental pediatricians, psychologists, and evaluation clinics are on Oahu. Maui families frequently look to Honolulu when local options run out, or begin with telehealth and local pediatric input.

Two free or low-cost starting points anchor the system here:

  • Imua Family Services (Kahului) / Hawaii Early Intervention Section (EIS) — on Maui, Part C early intervention is delivered locally through Imua Family Services. For children birth to 3, it is free and requires no diagnosis to begin. That means a Kahului family worried about a toddler can start getting support and developmental assessment right away, on-island. Imua: 808-244-7467. Neighbor-island EIS line: 1-800-235-5477. https://imuafamilyservices.org
  • Med-QUEST (QUEST Integration) — Hawaii Medicaid — covers diagnostic evaluation for children, and notably does not require prior authorization for screening or diagnostic evaluation. For eligible families that removes a common bureaucratic hurdle.

For a comprehensive diagnostic evaluation, the journey often runs through Oahu. Some Maui families fly to Honolulu for a full evaluation; others begin with telehealth screening and local pediatric input, reserving inter-island travel for the pieces that must happen in person. Telehealth has made the early steps more reachable, though it doesn't erase the distance or the cost of a flight.

School-based evaluation is another route. Because Hawaii operates a single statewide district — the Hawaii Department of Education (HIDOE) — the process for requesting a school evaluation is uniform across islands, even if staffing varies by school. A school's educational eligibility determination is not the same as a clinical medical diagnosis, but it can open the door to IEP supports. See our advocacy guide for how to make that request in writing.
