Adaptive Swim Lessons in New York City

Why swimming is a safety priority — not just a hobby — for autistic children, and where to find adaptive and special-needs swim programs across the five boroughs.

Water draws many autistic children, and that combination of attraction and elopement risk is why swim skills are treated as a safety issue, not an extracurricular. Research has consistently found that autistic children are at markedly higher risk of drowning than their peers.

New York City has adaptive and inclusive swim programs run by the YMCA, NYC Parks, JCCs, and private instructors. This page explains what adaptive swim is and lists verified NYC options.
