For autism families, swim lessons are a safety intervention first and an activity second — drowning is a leading cause of death for autistic children, driven by wandering toward water. Corpus Christi did something most cities have not: it trained its own municipal instructors in an adaptive method, so the public pools are a real option rather than a fallback.
Municipal instructors certified in the Adaptive Swim Whisperers method, teaching individuals with autism, anxiety, sensory needs, and physical challenges. Certification came via a Swim Angelfish train-the-trainer workshop at Collier Pool.
