Speech therapy in Grand Rapids: finding the right support
Speech-language therapy is one of the most useful and least controversial supports for many autistic children, and West Michigan has plenty of it — through hospitals, private clinics, and schools. This page explains where to find it, how it is funded, and what to look for in a therapist who respects how your child communicates.
Speech Therapy in Grand Rapids specifically
In Grand Rapids, speech therapy is available through several channels. Corewell Health / Helen DeVos Children's Hospital and other hospital outpatient rehabilitation departments across West Michigan offer speech-language services, as do a large number of private clinics and independent SLPs throughout Kent County. Many ABA and multidisciplinary clinics also have SLPs on staff, which can make coordinating care easier.
For funding, most state-regulated private insurance plans cover medically necessary speech therapy, and Michigan's Medicaid program covers it for eligible children. For Medicaid families, speech therapy connected to the Autism Benefit may be coordinated through the Network180 system, while medically-based speech therapy can also be accessed through Medicaid-enrolled providers directly. Separately, eligible students can receive speech-language services at school as part of their IEP at no cost to families — though school-based services are geared to educational needs and may look different from clinic-based therapy. Many families use both.
