Autism Diagnosis in Chicago specifically

In Chicago, comprehensive evaluations are available at academic medical centers including Lurie Children's Hospital, which runs autism and neurodevelopmental programs, and Rush University Medical Center, which offers autism assessment and treatment services. These centers are thorough and well regarded, but demand is high and waits can run many months. Independent psychologists and neuropsychologists in private practice are a second route and can sometimes see you sooner; ask about their autism-specific experience and the standardized tools they use.

For children under three, Illinois Early Intervention — through your regional Child and Family Connections (CFC) office — provides free evaluations with no diagnosis required, and you can self-refer. For school-age children, your CPS or district school must evaluate for special education eligibility when you request it in writing. And regardless of age, once a developmental disability including autism is suspected, families are widely advised to register on PUNS, Illinois's statewide waitlist for DD Waiver services, because placement depends on how long you have waited. You enroll through a local Independent Service Coordination agency.
