Summer can be a gift or a grind, depending on what you can line up. Chicago and the surrounding area have a range of camps — from fully specialized autism and special-needs programs to inclusive mainstream camps with support. We have written this as a starting point on the types available and how to choose one that fits your child.

Camp Red Kite – Chicago Children's Theatre

Theatre day camp for autistic and neurodivergent youth

Adaptive theatre camp built around social-emotional learning and sensory drama games, run by the Chicago Children's Theatre in the West Loop since the Red Kite Project began in 2006. Sessions are posted seasonally and the listing is often empty between announcements — join the email list or call (312) 374-8829 for the next dates.

Camp O – Sonia Shankman Orthogenic School

Inclusive structured day camp

Two-week day camp in Hyde Park for ages 7–14 with autism, ADHD, anxiety or social communication needs, running a 1:4 staff-to-camper ratio with social-emotional learning embedded in normal camp activities. Popular and small — there is an interest form for the waitlist, and limited need-based aid.

Keshet – Camp Keshet North & South

Inclusive/special-needs summer camp

Regional — Northbrook, about 30–40 minutes north of downtown. Keshet runs half-day inclusive camps at 3210 Dundee Rd for ages 5–13 and teens 14–21, with 1:1 through 1:4 ratios. Costs run into the thousands per summer; ask about the Special Camp Scholarship Endowment discount and Keshet's own need-based fee assistance.
