Autism support groups in Chicago

Few things help more in the early days than talking to someone who has been there. Chicago has a mix of parent support groups, autistic-led communities, and organizations that combine peer support with practical navigation help. We have written this as a starting point for finding people who get it.

Have Dreams

Autism nonprofit with free parent support group

Regional — Evanston and Park Ridge, roughly 30 minutes from downtown. Serving the autism community since 1996, Have Dreams runs a free support group for parents alongside counseling, after-school, adult and workforce programs, and describes itself as neurodivergent-affirming. The Autism Program of Illinois (TAP)

Statewide provider network and referral portal

Statewide network — a collaboration of universities and community organizations operating centers across Illinois, with a referral portal that routes you to the nearest partner. Partners offer support groups, family resource rooms, screening and diagnostics, though not every service is at every site.

Urban Autism Solutions

Chicago nonprofit — transition and vocational programs

West Side nonprofit founded in 2012 focused on young adults with autism and related disabilities, running the West Side Transition Academy, Growing Solutions Farm in the Illinois Medical District, and social programs. Aimed at ages 16–22 and beyond rather than younger children — useful if you are planning ahead for transition.
