Occupational therapy for autistic kids in Chicago

Occupational therapy is one of the most practical, widely used autism supports, helping with sensory needs, motor skills and everyday routines. Chicago has plenty of OT providers. We have written this as a starting point on what OT does, how it is covered here, and how to find a good fit.

Occupational Therapy in Chicago specifically

Chicago offers occupational therapy through hospital and clinic settings, private practices, and schools. Hospital-affiliated programs sit alongside a large private OT market, and many practices offer sensory gyms and integrated approaches. School-based OT is provided through IEPs for eligible students. The range is genuinely useful, though it is worth vetting for autism-specific and sensory-integration experience.

On funding, Illinois's autism insurance mandate means most state-regulated private plans cover medically necessary OT, and Medicaid covers it for children under 21 through EPSDT. For children under three, OT is commonly available through Early Intervention via your regional Child and Family Connections office. As with all Illinois developmental disability services, registering on PUNS early is widely recommended for longer-term planning, even though OT itself is generally billed to insurance, Medicaid or Early Intervention.
