Speech therapy for autistic kids in Chicago

We have written this as a starting point on what speech therapy actually addresses, how it is covered here, and how to find a good speech-language pathologist for your child.

Speech Therapy in Chicago specifically

Chicago has a deep bench of speech-language pathologists — in hospital and clinic settings, private practices, and through schools. Hospital-affiliated programs at centers like Lurie Children's and Rush sit alongside a large private market, and school-based speech services are provided through IEPs for eligible students. That range gives families options, though it also means vetting for autism-specific and AAC experience is worthwhile.

On funding, Illinois's autism insurance mandate means most state-regulated private plans cover medically necessary speech therapy, and Medicaid covers it for children under 21 through EPSDT. For children under three, speech services are commonly provided through Early Intervention via your regional Child and Family Connections office. As with all Illinois developmental disability services, registering on PUNS early is widely recommended for longer-term support planning, even though speech therapy itself is usually billed to insurance, Medicaid or Early Intervention.
