ABA Therapy in Portland, Maine
Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is the most-studied autism intervention in the United States — and also the most contested. If you have just heard the term from a pediatrician or an evaluation report, you probably have questions, and you may have already run into strong opinions in both directions.
Our job is not to tell you to choose ABA or to avoid it. Our job is to give you enough honest information — including the criticism — to decide well for your own child.
In Portland and greater southern Maine, ABA-based services do exist and are more reachable than in much of the rest of the state. This page walks through what ABA is, why people disagree about it, and the practical steps to access it here.
ABA Therapy in Portland specifically
In Maine, the main funding pathway for ABA-based behavioral treatment for eligible children under 21 is MaineCare (Medicaid) Section 28 — Rehabilitative and Community Support Services (RCS). Section 28 covers evidence-based ABA methods for members who have cognitive impairments and functional limitations; it is a state plan benefit rather than a waiver, and it ends at age 21. Private, state-regulated insurance plans are also required, under Maine's 2010 autism insurance mandate, to cover diagnosis and treatment including ABA for individuals under 21.
Greater Portland is where most of Maine's ABA providers cluster. Spurwink, a large Maine nonprofit headquartered in the Portland area, serves more than 500 people with autism across a range of services and is one of the anchors of the local system. That said, we want to be honest: even in Portland, waitlists for ABA are common, and finding a provider whose philosophy matches yours can take time. For families in rural and northern Maine — Aroostook, Washington, and other far counties — access is genuinely harder, and some families travel long distances or wait months.
If your child is under 3, you do not need to sort out ABA first. Early intervention runs through Child Development Services (CDS), the statewide, state-run program, at no cost. See our Maine state overview and the Portland city page for the broader landscape.
