Getting an Autism Diagnosis in Portland, Maine
Wondering whether your child is autistic is one of the harder stretches of parenting — the waiting, the uncertainty, the pressure to "do something." Getting a formal evaluation can feel daunting, but it opens the door to services and, for many families, to a clearer understanding of their child.
Portland has more diagnostic capacity than most of Maine, but waitlists are real everywhere, so it helps to know your options and start more than one process at once.
This page explains where evaluations happen in and around Portland, what the process looks like, and what you can do for your child while you wait.
Autism Diagnosis in Portland specifically
In Portland, the main diagnostic hub is MaineHealth — specifically the Barbara Bush Children's Hospital at Maine Medical Center, which offers developmental-behavioral pediatrics, alongside MaineHealth Behavioral Health's autism and developmental disorder services. For families in the Bangor region, Northern Light Health provides services farther north.
We want to be honest about geography: families in Aroostook, Washington, and other rural and northern counties often travel significant distances for evaluation, and the shortage of developmental-behavioral specialists statewide means waits can stretch. Portland families are comparatively well-positioned, but "comparatively" does not mean "quickly."
Crucially, for a child under 3, you do not need a diagnosis or even a doctor's referral to start early intervention. Child Development Services (CDS) is Maine's statewide, state-run early intervention program; it serves birth-to-3 under Part C at no cost and also administers preschool special education for ages 3-5 (Part B, Section 619). You can self-refer by calling CDS at 1-800-262-2232. See our Portland city page and Maine overview for more context.
