Speech Therapy in Portland, Maine
Speech therapy is one of the most common supports families pursue after an autism diagnosis — but it is worth being clear about what it is really for. Good speech therapy is about communication, not just spoken words.
For a non-speaking or minimally-speaking child, that distinction matters enormously. Communication can happen through gestures, picture systems, and speech-generating devices as well as through talking, and a skilled therapist presumes your child has something to say.
In Portland and greater southern Maine, speech-language services are available through early intervention, schools, hospitals, and private clinics. This page explains how it works and how to find it here.
Speech Therapy in Portland specifically
In Portland, speech therapy reaches families through several doors. For children under 3, Child Development Services (CDS) — Maine's statewide, state-run early intervention program — can provide speech-language services at no cost, and no diagnosis or referral is needed to start; call 1-800-262-2232. For ages 3-5, CDS administers preschool special education, and once a child is school-aged, Portland Public Schools may provide speech therapy as a related service on an IEP.
Beyond the public routes, MaineHealth and other hospital-affiliated clinics, along with private practices in greater Portland, offer speech-language services, often billable through MaineCare or private insurance. Southern Maine has comparatively more SLPs than the rest of the state.
We want to be honest about access. Even in Portland, there can be waitlists for private speech therapy, and pediatric SLPs with autism and AAC experience are in demand. For families in rural and northern Maine, the shortage is sharper, and telehealth speech therapy is sometimes the most practical option.
