Speech therapy in Detroit: finding the right support

Speech-language therapy is one of the most useful and least controversial supports for many autistic children, and Metro Detroit has plenty of it — through hospitals, private clinics, and schools. This page explains where to find it, how it is funded, and what to look for in a therapist who respects how your child communicates.

Kaufman Children's Center

Pediatric speech and language clinic (apraxia specialty)

Regional — in West Bloomfield, roughly 30 minutes northwest of Detroit, and home of childhood apraxia of speech expert Nancy Kaufman, who created the Kaufman Speech to Language Protocol. Speech services are provided up to age 10. Families travel here from out of state for the intensive programs, so ask about the waitlist for regular weekly therapy versus intensive visits.

MetroEHS Pediatric Therapy – Detroit

Pediatric speech-language therapy

Speech-language pathologists treating birth through adolescence at the Detroit clinic on Collingwood Street, with other Michigan locations including Dearborn, Dearborn Heights, Southfield and Madison Heights. Handles developmental delay, apraxia, autism-related communication needs and feeding/swallowing. Teletherapy is also offered if transport is a barrier.

Henry Ford Health Speech-Language Pathology

Hospital-based pediatric speech therapy

Hospital system program with locations across southeast Michigan treating autism spectrum communication needs, childhood apraxia of speech, articulation and language delays, stuttering and feeding/swallowing disorders. You will need a physician, PA or NP referral signed within the last 90 days before booking. Convenient to coordinate if your child is already being seen at Henry Ford's autism center.

Healing Haven Speech Therapy

Speech therapy within an autism-focused clinic

Regional — available at the Madison Heights, Farmington Hills and Clinton Township clinics, the nearest roughly 20 minutes north of Detroit. Can be used as a standalone service rather than only alongside their ABA program. Not credentialed with Medicaid or state plans.
