Developmental Pediatrician

A developmental pediatrician is a board-certified pediatrician with additional fellowship training in developmental-behavioral pediatrics. They evaluate and manage conditions like autism, ADHD, learning differences, intellectual disability, motor delays, and complex developmental concerns — often working with children whose situations don't fit neatly into one specialty.

What they actually do: comprehensive evaluations that integrate developmental, medical, and behavioral information; diagnosis or differential diagnosis when more than one possibility is on the table; coordination across other specialists (therapists, neurologists, geneticists); medication management when relevant (for example, for ADHD, sleep, or anxiety co-occurring with autism); and ongoing follow-up across childhood.

Developmental pediatricians are different from your child's general pediatrician (who provides ongoing primary care) and from psychologists or psychiatrists (who focus more narrowly on mental health diagnosis and treatment). A child can — and many do — see all of these at different times.

When to see one: a complex or unclear developmental picture; concerns that touch both medical and behavioral domains; questions about medications related to a developmental or behavioral condition; or a second opinion on a diagnosis. For more straightforward autism diagnosis, a psychologist or your pediatrician's referral may be sufficient — a developmental pediatrician is often the right call when things are more complicated.

Developmental pediatricians are scarce nationally; waits can be long, sometimes very long. It's worth getting on a waitlist early if you think you'll want one, and keeping your regular pediatrician's care continuous in the meantime.
